Overview of Yakutat

The town of Yakutat, AK, covers about 9,460 square miles. Located on Monti Bay, the village boasts the only sheltered deep water port in the Gulf of Alaska. The town ranks first among 101 cities for highest average snowfall in a year, about 219 inches. The village also receives about 132 inches of rain, more than anywhere else in Alaska. This quaint community is an ideal location for those looking to rent in a small town with access to the great outdoors.

Living in Yakutat

If you're looking to get off the beaten path, the village and surrounding area offer plenty of room to roam, with a very low population density of 6.7 people per square mile. Since just 570 people call the village home, some might consider the whole town one big neighborhood. Like many places in Alaska, a strong sense of community binds the eight distinct neighborhoods of the village together.

The Alsek, Akwe, Italio, East and Tsiu Rivers are located nearby for those looking to really get away from it all. These remote rivers can only be accessed by small planes. Locals love fishing in these pristine rivers for cod, halibut, salmon and steelhead trout. In recent years, surfing in the waters along the area's beautiful, black sand beaches has also become popular.

The name Yakutat is a Tlingit word that means "where the canoes rest." Throughout history, the village has served as a convenient resting place for those passing through the area. Native Alaskan tribes inhabited this part of Alaska until the late 1800s, when a group of Swedish immigrants arrived. The Swedes built a church, school and sawmill. Due to the strategic location of the village, the United States government built two runways for military planes during World War II that are still used by Yakutat Airport.

The only way to get to the town is by plane. Alaska Airlines offers two flights each day to the area. No public transportation is available, and residents need a car to get around the sprawling area. Despite the town's remote location, plenty of apartments are available to rent, many with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
