Overview of Glendale

Apartments and rentals are abundant in Glendale, AZ, a suburban city in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Just nine miles from downtown Phoenix, in the Valley of the Sun, Glendale is a spunky and historical city in its own right.

Living in Glendale, AZ

In 1880 William J. Murphy and three Arizona builders looked at the empty Sonoran Desert that is now Glendale and saw possibilities. They formed the Arizona Canal Co. and launched a project to bring water to the desert. It took five years, 225 mules and whatever tools they could find to complete the canal. Soon after, the water lured early settlers. One of the first was William H. Bartlett who started a 640-acre fruit farm in 1886 that became known as Sahuaro Ranch. It still exists today, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and open to the public. In fact, Glendale has protected many of its historic homes and buildings.

Like many cities, the real growth began with World War II , the construction of air fields to train pilots for the military, and the influx of military men and their families. Thereafter, Glendale's growth paralleled Phoenix to the south. Primarily, it serves as a bedroom community to that larger city. Yet in the last decade, it has become a hub for professional sports in the metro area with Jobing.com Arena and the University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Glendale of today has a population of more than 226,000. Popular neighborhood districts in Glendale include: Ocotillo, Cactus, Sahuaro, Yucca, West Glenn Estates, Horizons West and Cholla.

Glendale Work & Study

Major employers in Glendale include those in health care, retail, education, consumer products and more. Plus, as a suburb of Phoenix, residents have easy freeway access to employment opportunities throughout the entire metropolitan area.

Educational institutions in Glendale include Glendale Community College; Midwestern University, a graduate college of medicine; and the Thunderbird School of Global Management, a graduate school of international management. Nearby in north Phoenix are campuses of the Maricopa Community College District and Arizona State University's West Campus.

Glendale Cost of Living

Compared to the rest of the country, Glendale's cost of living is just slightly above average, and possibly a bit less than other neighborhoods in metro Phoenix. This translates into some very affordable apartments and other rentals in Glendale. One-bedroom apartments can be found for as little at $350 monthly, with $650-$700 more typical. Two-bedrooms start at around $450 but again, are more commonly priced at $675 to $750. Prices vary, of course, by location, size and amenities available. You can also select from condos, townhomes and single-family homes for rent in Glendale.

Glendale Attractions & Entertainment

Historic Downtown Glendale is popular with residents and tourists to the Valley of Sun. The city's civic center can be found here, along with Murphy Park, home to local events and celebrations. Also found in this locale is Caitlin Court, which is best know for its antique stores and historic neighborhoods.

Glendale is home to the very unique Bead Museum, which is dedicated to beads and the art of beading. You can catch concerts and other shows throughout the year at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale. It's also the home of the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes. Also found in Glendale is the University of Phoenix Stadium where the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL play their home games. The stadium hosted the Super Bowl in 2008 and is the regular home of the Fiesta Bowl. Plus the LA Dodgers and Chicago White Sox share Camelback Stadium for spring training.

For a bit of history, there's family friendly Historic Sahuaro Rancho. Built in 1885, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property includes 17 historic buildings open for tours along with special events through the year.

Glendale Special Events

Glendale hosts special events throughout the year, which draw tourists and residents alike. The Glendale Summer Band Concert Series, which is nearly five decades old, is an eight-week concert series at Murphy Park Amphitheater. It features a community band of about 100 musicians. The Jazz and Blues Festival features local and national jazz and blues entertainers. And Glendale Chocolate Affaire celebrates chocolate, naturally, with more than 30 specialty vendors at Murphy Park downtown.
