A.P. Robinson, the chief engineer for the Little Rock-Fort Smith Railroad, founded Conway shortly after the Civil War ended. He received a deed to a tract of land as part of his compensation, which he gave back to the railroad so he could build a depot site. Conway became the seat of Faulkner County in 1873 and experienced rapid growth in size and population shortly thereafter. The city quickly became a trade center for the rural agricultural area, which, along with local universities, fueled the local economy until after World War II.

World War II led to a more diverse economy as businesspeople and small industries made their way to Conway. Conway has been nicknamed “The City of Colleges” because of the town’s number of universities, and many local residents work in various university positions to support the infrastructure of a college town. Twenty-four percent of locals work in educational, health and social services, while manufacturing and retail trade employ another 23 percent of residents.
