Apartment Decorating Dos and Donts

Apartment Decorating Dos and Don’ts

September 12, 2013 | Apartment Décor, DIY Home Improvement

When you move into your apartment, one of the first things you’ll want to do is make it your own. However, if you’re not a professional interior designer, the vision in your head doesn’t always turn out how you imagined. Apartment decorating can be a fun project to take on; you just have to know what to do and what not to do when it comes to interior design. Here are a few decorating tips to making your apartment look flawless:

Apartment Decorating Dos

Do sketch layouts. Before you head out and buy new furniture, pillows, rugs and other decor, sketch what you would like the room to look like first. This way, you won’t be overspending on items that either don’t fit in the space or don’t match the style.

Do keep the flow of the room in mind. You want to place your tables and furniture in a way that controls the flow. Place seating closer for a conversation area and leave enough room for family and friends to walk through the space without hitting any furniture.

Do get creative with lighting. The light in a room is often one of the most understated elements of interior design. Lighting can alter the feel of an area with the flip of a switch. Add wall sconces for a soft way to illuminate the space or opt for adjustable-height floor lamps as a cozy alternative. Consider using environmentally friendly bulbs, which can save money and energy.

Do find multiple uses for furniture. You can save on space by choosing functional pieces. Use an old truck as a coffee table and storage space. Ottomans also double as more space to store things like magazines, remote controls and other living room essentials.

Apartment Decorating Don’ts

Don’t take on more than you can handle. If you move into a blank canvas, it’s normal to want to take on every room all at once. However, doing so may get overwhelming fast. Instead, apply your interior decorating skills room by room.

Don’t be afraid to shake things up. While symmetry can be a good thing when decorating a rental, too much of it can make the room feel static. Switch things up by hanging wall art asymmetrically or go free-form with the furniture. A blend of the two styles will complement each other for a perfect balance.

Don’t forget about the power of flowers. It’s amazing what an arrangement of blooms can do to light up a room. Fill water glasses with bunches of twigs, ferns or other foliage or fill a few vases with your favorite flowers. Doing so, you’ll have an instant centerpiece that injects color and texture into the area.

Don’t clutter your room. Be sure to get rid of the things you really don’t need that are simply taking up space. Too many items can make the room look smaller. In the kitchen, put the appliances that you don’t use on a regular basis in storage cabinets to clear off countertop space.
