Apartments Around the World: Renting in Athens, Greece

November 28, 2011 | Best Cities, Best Cities and Neighborhoods

If you’re in need of some ancient culture and fantastic weather, look no further than the historic city of Athens, Greece! With the perfect mix of modern-day marvels and classic sites, Athens is one big adventure waiting to be explored. From the Parthenon and the Acropolis to the modern Olympic city, you will never get bored in Athens.

The city itself consists of 58 densely populated municipalities and is divided into many districts. The Omonoia district is home to the oldest square in Athens, boasting plenty of hotels and tourists. Syntagma is another district with the largest city square and is generally well-known for its upscale shopping and dining. If you’re a history buff, Plaka is a district known for its neoclassical architecture and beautiful scenery. In addition to these accolades, Plaka also happens to be right beneath the Acropolis.

If you find the sights and sounds of Athens simply too hard to part with, there are plenty of opportunities for long-term renting. Like most major cities, Athens has many websites devoted to the real estate market where real estate companies and landlords can post available apartments for rent. These sites are great places to start your search so that you can get a better idea of what you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend on a rental apartment or home. Advertisements in local newspapers, such as The Athens News, also provide some good information on what’s available. An interesting tactic that is more successful here than you might think is to simply ask around. Athens is known for its warm and friendly culture, so it is not uncommon for people in neighborhoods to talk and spread the word that they have a place for rent. If all else fails, the city also offers brokerages from traditional real estate agencies. In Athens, though, it’s important to note that a broker’s fee can range anywhere from 10%-15% of one year’s rent.

Just like in any other city, it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting into when signing a lease for an apartment. One interesting thing to remember is that by law in Athens, apartment leasing contracts are always for a minimum of three years. So before you sign your name on the dotted line, make sure that you’re ready to commit to the rental apartment or home lease for a substantial amount of time.

Once you do commit to a place, get ready for a new and exciting way to rent! Landlords in Greece are often characterized as fun, friendly women who quickly consider you to be part of the family! The tenant-landlord relationship is a valued one, so be prepared for your landlord to become an involved person within your life.
