Best Austin Neighborhoods for Outdoor Serenity

December 30, 2013 | Best Cities and Neighborhoods, Best Neighborhoods

Austin may be the Live Music Capital of the World, but this Lone Star hub is also chock full of outdoor adventures and sprawling green spaces. As one of the hippest cities in the country, Austin neighborhoods are full of life and highly energetic–maybe it’s because it often sits at the top of lists as one of the fittest cities in the country. After all, Austinites need to burn off the calories from all those deliciously greasy food trucks splayed around town. And can you blame them? With anything from cycling to stand-up paddle boating right in the heart of the city, 300 days of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 68 degrees, Austin is the perfect place for any outdoor enthusiast.

Downtown

If you’re looking for an Austin apartment downtown, you’re in luck: Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail is downtown’s crown jewel. This 10-mile off-road trail will make you quickly fall head-over-heels for Austin. With the city’s stunning skyline in the background, you can head out for a walk, run on the path or rent a kayak and paddle downstream. You want to get really active? Try stand-up-paddle-board yoga, a challenging combination of the fastest growing sport in the world and one of the oldest. Added bonus: Living in Downtown Austin puts you front and center for all of Austin’s unparalleled music festivals and within minutes of some of its hottest bars and restaurants.

South Austin

One of the best neighborhoods in Austin for active urbanites is South Austin. McKinney Falls State Park and Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail are both located in this area of town. McKinney borders the edge of South Austin, but it looks like a whole new world. Dense forest and an enormous granite field make this an ideal locale for hiking and camping. Spanning 640-acres, this park features a unique swimming pool and areas for fishing. The extension of the Lady Bird Lake trail makes it easy for South Austin residents to travel through scenic landscapes to the center of downtown.

West Austin

Find yourself an Austin apartment in the west side of town and you’ll be within minutes of the Hamilton Pool Preserve. Although it is technically just outside of the city limits, Hamilton Pool is surrounded by a limestone grotto with a beautiful tropical vibe and towering waterfall.

Barton Springs

The Barton Springs area is home to the Austin Nature and Science Center, Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park. The jewel of this area is Barton Springs Pool–it’s not like your typical neighborhood pool. As one of the city’s most famous landmarks, this spring-fed, 900-foot long swimming hole was formed when Barton Creek was halted by a dam. Despite its rocky bottom and natural lake atmosphere, this pool stays a perfect 68 degrees all year. This Austin neighborhood to the north of the city is also home to the family-friendly nature and science center, which has six free areas to explore.
