Best Chicago Neighborhoods for LGBT

October 30, 2013 | Best Cities and Neighborhoods, Best Neighborhoods

Chicago is home to the Sears (Willis) Tower, Magnificent Mile shopping, mouth-watering deep dish pizza and more than 30 miles of lakefront paths. This massive Midwest metropolis is also known for its large LGBT population. Chicago features gay-themed events and festivals and unbelievable nightlife geared toward LGBT culture. The best Chicago neighborhoods for LGBT people boast sprawling green spaces, lakefront access, a thriving food and drink culture and a welcoming environment. If you’re LGBT and looking for a Chicago apartment, consider one of these neighborhoods:

Boystown

It’s in the name! Boystown is the largest Chicago LGBT neighborhood and is home to the Pride Parade and Market Days, the largest two-day street festival in the Midwest. Just by stepping foot into Boystown, you immediately feel and see the rainbow pride all around you–-the street signs down Halstead are decorated in colorful hues. Home to a dense population of the city’s most LGBT-friendly nightclubs and bars, Boystown is the ultimate oasis for the flamboyantly fabulous. Unfortunately, this neighborhood can be a bit pricey due to all the amenities-–you’re only steps away from the sandy shores of Lake Michigan!

Pilsen

Located on the south side of the city, Pilsen is a homey neighborhood with a laid-back vibe and affordable Chicago apartments. As one of the most historic areas in the city, Pilsen has gone through several renaissances over the years, and is currently home to a large Latino population. It is also the site of the only gay Latino teen radio show in the nation. Pilsen is minutes away from the Loop, and is just a short transit or bike ride away from Greektown, Wicker Park and Little Italy. Oh, did we mention the food here is to die for?

Wicker Park

Home to everything eclectic, artistic and fashion-forward, Wicker Park may not be a burgeoning gay neighborhood by definition, but it is welcoming to any lifestyle. As one of the most popular Chicago neighborhoods, Wicker Park is lined with trendy coffee shops, hip boutique shopping and some of the city’s best dining options. The park itself, appropriately named Wicker Park, features a doggie area for your four-legged friends and a summer farmers market hailed as one of the best in the area. Nightlife here is non-stop as well. Wicker Park’s six-corner intersection is where the party people go on weekends, and it is also the location of the legendary Double Doors music venue.

Andersonville

Located on the north side of the city, Andersonville is a quaint neighborhood with tree-lined streets and a quiet vibe. This neighborhood is often referred to as “Girlstown” for its large lesbian population, but all members of the LGBT community tend to live here for its comfortable urban environment. This area is quickly gentrifying, so get into Andersonville before rents skyrocket. This area may be a bit of trek from the Loop, but it is close to the lake, Boystown and all of the north side’s amenities.
