Best Fitness Equipment for Small Spaces

January 9, 2014 | Apartment Lifestyle, Everyday Living

You can still work out at home if you live in a small apartment. It’s all about having the right equipment! Here are some of our favorite pieces of fitness equipment for small spaces:

Yoga Mat

Many people consider a yoga mat as an on-the-go fitness tool, but it’s perfect for at-home use as well. Not only can you practice your downward dog on this comfortable surface, you can use it to do a few rounds of sit-ups too.

Hand Weights

You’ve no doubt noticed racks of hand weights at your gym. When you want to set up your own fitness space, be sure to have a few dumbbell sizes on hand. Three-pound weights are great for light exercises, while 5- and 10-pound options are suitable for toning your muscles. These can easily be stored under your bed or on a shelf in your apartment.

Stepper

Don’t shy away from steppers just because they are synonymous with 1980s workout videos. These are actually valuable exercise tools. Steppers are great to increase your heart rate when you need to keep the noise down in your apartment. Remember: a quiet neighbor is a mindful one.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are quickly becoming a popular home gym tool for many reasons. They are the shape of a small rope, so they won’t take up much room in your home. Additionally, these bands will help you get a great workout on their arms and shoulders. Like hand weights, they are available in many different resistance levels, which allow you to work up to tighter cords as you build muscle.

Folding Treadmill

If cardio is a big part of your workout routine, consider getting a folding treadmill. Designers of at-home fitness equipment understand that not everyone has tons of free space, so there are a variety of units available that fold for easy storage. With a treadmill in your home, you can get a great walking or running workout at any time.

Stationary Bike

There is a variety of small stationary bikes available that can be tucked into a corner. Just place the bike in a nook in your apartment and get your workout in while you watch TV or stream your favorite shows online.

Pulley System

A pulley system is a good option for people working on building muscle tone. It’s an alternative to large weights and works with pulley cords that alter the weight and resistance level depending on the setting you choose.

Balance Ball

Balance balls–also called stability balls–are perfect for strengthening your core muscles. Many of them come with a hand pump so you can easily deflate the ball when it’s not in use.
