Three Ways to Endure a Bad Roommate

Three Ways to Endure a Bad Roommate

August 28, 2013 | Apartment Lifestyle, Roomie Relations

How many times have you found yourself struggling to get along with your roomie in your apartment? Having a bad roommate is not uncommon, meaning you shouldn’t feel bad about yourself for welcoming the wrong person into your humble abode. However, it can be a difficult situation to endure with until your lease is up, which might not be for quite some time. Whether you think that your relationship with your bad roommate is salvageable or simply want to get through the next few months, here are some tips for coping.

1. Set Cleanliness Standards

Perhaps your biggest problem with your roomie is that he or she can never stay clean. This means leaving unwashed dishes in the sink, laundry on the floor and crumbs on the couch. If this is your main issue, you may be able to fix it by simply talking to your roommate about the specific problems. Sit down and identify what you consider to be “clean,” and set some standards around the apartment for the both of you. In the end, this tactic can help you relieve an ample amount of tension.

2. Be Open-Minded

Maybe you aren’t getting along with your roommate because you don’t share the same hobbies or interests. If this is the case, make an effort to have an open mind. Additionally, try not to judge your roomie just because of his or her tastes. Your roommate may be the same boat. Coming to a compromise and respecting each other’s personal beliefs can help you forge a lasting relationship. Even if these differences mean you spend less time together, you’ll be able to remove the animosity.

3. Always Communicate

Depending on who’s name is on your lease, you might not be able to immediately kick out your roommate in the event that you aren’t getting along. For this reason, it’s in your best interest to address specific problems as they come up and develop a way to resolve your issues until your lease ends. Don’t allow tension to linger and problems to boil over–this can negatively impact your own feelings and quality of living in your apartment.
