Feng Shui Basics for Beginners

July 27, 2013 | Apartment Décor, DIY Home Improvement

During your forays into adulthood, you’ve no-doubt heard the term “feng shui” thrown about. It’s the type of design concept that everyone seems to be aware of–and to which you nod and smile politely when it’s mentioned–but no one seems to have a clue as to what the world of feng shui actually is. But hey, it does sound intriguing, right? While the concept is certainly more complicated than it lets on, feng shui basics are possible to incorporate into your apartment decor.

What the Heck is Feng Shui, Anyway?

To make a long story short, feng shui is an ancient Chinese method of creating balance in physical environments. No, we don’t mean precariously stacking your furniture on top of itself like Jenga pieces–think more along the lines of harmony and positive energy. Feng shui basics are all about embracing your environment and arranging objects so their chi (energy) has the desired effect on your life.

Why Would I Use It?

For people that believe in the effectiveness of the world of feng shui, it is an important means of achieving balance in life despite the constant changes to which we are subjected. According to the rules of feng shui, everything has chi–even your bed and garbage bins–and how those objects are arranged has an effect on every aspect of our lives. Feng shui is supposed to restore balance to your life when everything seems to be off-kilter.

OK, How Do I Get Started?

Arranging your apartment according to the principles of feng shui may be a long process, but to get started you’ll want to take a look at the feng shui bagua chart to determine which areas of your living space relate to which parts of your life, such as family, health and career. There are several different schools of feng shui, so you’ll need to find the one that best suits you. Each school of thought has its own feng shui basics, which will give you clues as to how to arrange your apartment. Before you even begin rearranging furniture, however, you’ll want to declutter–that’s a common theme across the world of feng shui because it cleanses negative energy from your environment.
