Gyms in Austin, Texas

Top 5 Gyms in Austin, Texas

August 3, 2013 | Best Cities, Best Cities and Neighborhoods

Now that you’re all settled into your Austin apartment, you’re going to need some exercise that doesn’t involve lifting moving boxes. Lucky for you, Rent.com has the rundown on some of the top gyms in Austin, soon to be your favorite places to work out. From big to small, from expansive to exclusive, we’ll fill you in. All you have to do is work up a sweat.

Pure Austin

907 West Fifth Street, Suite 201 and 4210 West Braker Lane

Pure Austin has won too many “best of” awards to list—and for good reasons. This is a homegrown business with two locations. The one right by Lady Bird Lake is excellent for training triathletes. There, you’ll find an indoor rock wall, plus a section of private lake and trail. That’s not to mention the state-of-the-art machines, classes, personal training, massage and more. The owner describes Pure Austin as “an indoor gym for outdoor people.”

Life Time Fitness

13725 Ranch Road 620 North

Life Time Fitness may be a national chain, but that doesn’t keep it from regularly getting high marks from Austin locals. This place is massive, with 20,000 members, 24-hour access, and all the facilities you could want. Come in for personal training, indoor and outdoor pools, a rock wall, sports courts, a café, hundreds of machines to work out on, and spotless locker rooms. This isn’t the place for local color, and it’s a bit pricier, but you get a lot of value for your dollar.

Castle Hill Fitness

1112 North Lamar Boulevard, Suite B

If Life Time Fitness is exactly what you don’t want in a gym, you should head directly to Castle Hill Fitness. This place is all personality. It isn’t huge, but they pack a lot of exercise into their small space. At Castle Hill, you’ll get group classes, yoga, indoor cycling, acupuncture, personal training, all kinds of special events, and more. You’ll also be likely to get to know the staff. There’s no pool, but they do have a café and a bike shop.

Hyde Park Gym

4125 Guadalupe Street

Hyde Park Gym is a bit of a paradox. On the one hand, this is a hardcore Austin gym for sweat junkies and power lifters. On the other hand, the family-friendly atmosphere keeps all kinds coming back. They’re definitely doing their part to keep Austin weird. Here you’ll get high quality equipment with no frills, but more importantly, no contracts, no start-up fees, and no hard sells.

Mecca Gym and Spa

524 North Lamar Boulevard

Let’s face it. Sometimes we all want to feel special. If that sounds like you, you can spend a bit more and join Mecca. From the state-of-the-art cardio equipment to the spectacular city views, this place is one of the best gyms in Austin for nice perks: laundry service, private showers with dual heads, a eucalyptus steam room—the list goes on. There’s also a full-service spa here, so if you’d like to lie back and let someone else get some exercise, you’re in luck.
