The Pros and Cons of Hiring Movers
Remember the days when you could fit your entire life in the back of your beat-up, hand-me-down car? You never would have considered hiring movers because, after all, isn’t that what friends are for? But as time passes and you begin to collect more furniture, knickknacks and cookware, hiring movers starts to sound like a pretty good idea–even with the cost involved. Still think a group of friends bribed with a six-pack and a few pizzas will cut it? Consider the pros and cons of hiring movers:
PRO: No Heavy Lifting
One of the worst things about a DIY move is lifting all of the heavy furniture–from your couch, to your bedroom set to your TV–and somehow finding a way to transport it to your new digs. When you hire movers, you won’t have to do any heavy lifting whatsoever. Just sit back, relax, and watch them hoist your dresser as if it were as light as a pillow.
Unsurprisingly, hiring movers can be a bit on the pricey side. While you may be able to get a discount if you pack up all of your things yourself or offer to rent your own truck, it will set you back a couple hundred dollars at a minimum. Your friends, on the other hand, will likely do it for free. If you don’t have tons of heavy furniture, the expense of hiring movers may not be worth it.
PRO: Faster Move
When doing it yourself, moving can be an all-day process. However, if you hire movers, they may get the job done in just a few hours. That way, you’ll have the rest of the day free to set up your new apartment or do some celebrating. Plus, you probably won’t have to take off as much time from work.
CON: Less Control
When you’re trusting your move to professionals, you won’t have as much control over the process as you would if you were doing it yourself. If you find a great moving company, you’ll have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, if the idea of leaving the way your possessions are handled and packed up to strangers is keeping you up at night, it may be best to do it on your own.
PRO: They’re Professionals
You may have moved in between a few apartments in your life, but professional movers do it every day. They’ll know the best ways to pack the truck and wrap your valuables to keep them secure during the move, and will, let’s face it, probably be more efficient than you are.
