How to Find Deals Online

April 6, 2013 | Coupons & Deals, Ways to Save

Everyone has seen those ads pop up on their computer screen–you know, the one’s that say you’ve won ten free iPods, a trip to Jamaica and a private jet. The majority of us can recognize a scam from a great deal, but online shopping tips can come in handy when you’re looking to get some bang for your buck (without falling prey to a hacker). Rent.com is here to to tell you how to find deals online! Consider these online shopping tips to stay safe and beat the system at the same time.

Thrift Online

Thrift stores are great for securing deals, but did you know that there are plenty of online secondhand shops? Plaid Goat sells lots of stylish and mainstream clothing brands, and Goodwill allows users to shop online for a bevy of items. You can also buy second-hand clothes on Tradesy (and maybe make a few bucks from selling some your old duds). New moms and dads will undoubtedly want to consider websites like Baby Outfitter, Storkbrokers and Thred Up, which all sell gently used onesies, tiny shoes and other outfits kids are likely to outgrow within a few months.

Join Communities

Many websites have active online communities and forums. One fashion-forward example is the online retailer ModCloth, which sells a variety of vintage-inspired, offbeat fashions as well as some actual vintage pieces. Once you become part of an online community, you and other users can swap items, share information about great sales and direct each other to cool new websites. You might even make a few online friends!

Look Outside of Groupon and Living Social

By all means, join these communities, but there are plenty of locally-based deal sites that might be even more beneficial to your cash health. Chicagoans who enjoy the city’s active nightlife scene often find great deals on drink specials, event tickets and more through the loco-centric website Poggled (use Google to find similar sites for your city).

There are also great daily deal sites that operate on a national scale. Woot is a popular choice, as are DailyCandy, Veryjane, HauteLook (great for fashionistas!), Gilt and MyDailyThread.

Search Around

Lastly, one of the most important online shopping tips: Don’t buy mindlessly. If it’s on the internet, chances are it’s sold in more than one place. Anthropologie–a notoriously desirable yet slightly out-of-reach clothing retailer–sells lots of non-exclusive items that you may be able to find at a cheaper price on ModCloth, Amazon or other retailers. Google the item’s product name and see what comes up in your shopping results!
