September 6, 2013 | DIY Home Improvement, Handy How-Tos

Masons jars were once simply those things your grandma used when making jams, but their popularity has steadily been growing. When you’re decorating on a budget, mason jar crafts are a simple way to add some pizzazz to your apartment on the cheap. Use these easy mason jar DIY projects to completely revamp your apartment without breaking the bank.

1. Make a Stunning Mason Jar Centerpiece

You don’t have to be an accomplished artist to complete this mason jar craft. You can easily create a rustic centerpiece. Simply place flowers, a candle (maybe even one floating in water) or beads inside of a mason jar.

For a little something extra, choose your favorite paint color–any acrylic paint will do. Pour the paint inside the jar, secure the lid and swirl it around. Once the inside of the mason jar is completely covered, remove the lid, pour out the excess paint and let it sit until it’s dry.

2. Light the Way with a Mason Jar Lamp

It’s easy to make an oil lamp for your patio or backyard using mason jars. Simply poke a hole in the lid with a hole punch or can opener–whatever you have on hand. Next, fill the jar halfway with water and carefully pour in oil until the liquid almost reaches the rim. Create a wick by soaking a .5-inch-wide and 4-inch-long piece of loose-weave cotton or linen fabric in the oil. Push the wick through the hole in the lid so about half an inch is sticking out. Close the jar and your oil lamp is complete!

For those who are handy, you can even make a hanging lamp by purchasing a pendant light kit from a hardware store.

3. Replace Store-Bought Soap Dispensers

Easy Mason Jar Crafts - Soap Dispenser

Ready to get rid of that ugly plastic store-bought soap dispenser? You can choose to leave it clear or paint it to match your decorating scheme. Before you begin, purchase a soap dispenser pump at your local hardware store.

Begin by using a nail and hammer to create a hole in the lid of your jar. Use needle nose pliers to pull back the metal on the underside of the lid so the hole is large enough to fit the pump. Using a hot glue gun, secure the pump to the lid. Spray paint the lid and pump so they match, fill your jar with soap and put on the lid. Voila! Chic vintage decor.
