Neighborhood Information You Need Before the Move

April 28, 2013 | Apartment Hunting, Apartment Hunting Advice

If you’re looking for a new neighborhood to settle into, some of the first things you may look for are proximity to nightlife and shopping–and we don’t blame you! However, finding out vital neighborhood information about everyday necessities is very important; and you won’t regret won’t regret knowing where the post office is located the day before rent is due.

Governmental Buildings

You might want to consider living in an apartment for rent near a library, post office or police headquarters. Having amenities like these nearby is not only convenient, it can also make the neighborhood feel safer. If you’re living on your own for the first time, it may just calm your nerves to know there are police officers within minutes of your pad.

Grocery Store

This may seem like obvious neighborhood information, but it can be hard to remember how necessary a grocery store is when you see an impressive apartment. Don’t be fooled–having a grocery store nearby is key! Before checking out a new place, take a stroll around the neighborhood or look on a map to find the closest grocery store–especially if you won’t have access to a car. Live in a four seasons city? Consider how the trek would be in the snow!

Banks

In a downtown center, you’re likely to find an ATM every other block, but what if none of them are run by your bank? Not living near one of your bank’s branches isn’t the end of the world, but it can sure make it difficult when you’re going to a cash-only bar. Luckily, many employers today offer direct deposit, so heading to the bank may not even be a regular errand for you.

Schools

Did you not realize that your new apartment for rent is only a block away from an elementary school until move-in day when you saw hundreds of kids running around? Living near a school is perfect for families, but young professionals may not want to be front-and-center of the foot traffic.

Medical Center

You may not need to go to the doctor regularly, but if you wake up at 2AM with an asthma attack, you’re not going to want to travel far. Check to see if there is a 24-hour center near you, such as an immediate care center or a drug store clinic.
