If you have recently rented a Philadelphia apartment (or are looking for a bit of a historical adventure in the city you have long called home), there are two Philly neighborhoods you absolutely must explore.

Today it may be known for its cheesesteaks, but Philadelphia was once the epicenter of Revolutionary America and the cornerstone of a young nation. If you’re a history buff, check out our Philadelphia neighborhood guide for history buffs.

Center City

The area known as Center City is home to the most famous historic attractions in Philadelphia, and seeing them is well worth braving the throngs of tourists. This bustling area of Philly is where you will find Independence Hall, the site where America’s Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, and Christ Church burial ground, where you will find the graves of early American leaders such as Benjamin Franklin. Don’t forget to swing by the Liberty Bell while you’re in the area! It’s one of Philadelphia’s most well-known icons.

Northwest Philly

Northwest Philadelphia is one of the most historic neighborhoods in the city. The area is packed with colonial buildings and is most well-known for being the site of Germantown Philadelphia, which to this day carries traces of its German and Mennonite founders. Aside from being generally charming, this area also boast a number of historic attractions. President George Washington twice lived in the Deshler-Morris House, and the Historic Rittenhouse Town is the site of America’s first paper mill. After a long day of sightseeing, head over to the Manayunk area of Northwest Philadelphia to experience what Philly’s nightlife has to offer. Even the Founding Fathers had a pint or two after a long day!
