Renting in China: How Small is Too Small?

May 25, 2010 | Rental Trends, Rental Trends and Real Estate News

In many cities across the country renters are living in spaces that are too small for their liking either because they’ve down-sized due to the economy, have consolidated households with roommates or family, or live in a metropolis where space is at a premium.

However, after comparing some of these smaller U.S. apartments to those found in Beijing, China, the former suddenly seem palatial! As one of the densest cities in the world, Beijing has developed a unique way to fit more renters into a single apartment – thus saving space and expenses.

Such apartments are often divided into tiny rooms, or “pods,” where individuals can rent a 7 sq. ft. room for under $40 per month, which just might be the lowest cost of living that we’ve found for a major city. The rooms generally have no windows, and fit little more than just a human being – so you might want to think twice before complaining about how small your apartment is!

A similar trend can be found in Hong Kong, where an architect has divided one 344 sq. ft. apartment into 24 rooms! Although at first glance, this might seem similar to the apartment pods available in Beijing, this 24-room Hong Kong apartment is home to just the architect himself. His technique involves a series of movable walls and Murphy beds that can be shuffled back and forth in order to create a desired layout for each day.

Is living in miniscule apartments like this genius or crazy? How would you deal with living in a space this small? Let us know what you think!
