Saving with Sunday Newspaper Coupons

January 24, 2013 | Everyday Savings, Ways to Save

You wouldn’t throw away money, would you? No, of course not. And yet a quick glance through pretty much any recycling bin will show you no end of circulars and newspaper inserts covered in coupons. If you’re not sure where to start, we’re happy to help with how to save using coupons.

The first thing you should do to get your couponing started is just pay attention. Practically every day your post officer will slip a bundle of circulars through your mail slot. Take the time to go through these glossy pages and snip out savings.

While you may think buying any paper will reward you with a sheaf of discount inserts, that’s not necessarily true. To start, if you’re asking where to find coupons in the newspaper, you’re thinking of the wrong question. The right question is “when” and the answer is Sunday.

Each Sunday (except for most holiday weekends), you should find a nice thick stack of inserts in any reasonably sized newspaper. You can also find Sunday newspaper coupons in free local papers. Exactly which coupons and how much they’re worth will depend on the specific newspaper you get.

There are three main providers of Sunday inserts: Smartsource, Redplum, and Proctor & Gamble. A little poking around a decent newsstand should show you which newspaper is going to offer you the best bargains. While a Sunday paper may set you back $1.50 or so, if you’ll save $6.00 with the coupons, that’s still a good deal.

If you’re not interested in where to find coupons in the newspaper, you still may be keen on saving money. Consider asking friends and neighbors who get the Sunday paper to save their coupon inserts for you. If you live in an apartment building, you can also swing past the communal recycle bin on Sunday evening—chances are at least one of your neighbors is throwing away coupon inserts.

Collecting and using coupons may seem like a waste of time, but every dollar counts—and those dollars add up! If you’re looking for more ways to save, we’ve got them.
