Transform Your Dorm Room Decor
You walked across the stage on graduation day, and now you’re officially an adult. Shouldn’t your apartment décor fit the part? Dorm room décor often consists of less-than-chic plastic bins and containers, drab shelving units and old movie posters. Fear not! You don’t have to shell out big bucks–although you may want to–to decorate your first post-graduation apartment with style. DIY apartment décor allows you to put your own thumbprint on a room without breaking the bank.
Get Some Frames
One of the easiest ways to transform your college décor is to get frames for your posters and photos. Sure, sticking pictures on the wall with tacks or tape is appropriate for college living, but it looks a little cheesy in a post-grad apartment. Frames can get a bit pricey, but it’s a good investment because you can easily change the poster. Want to create your own? Purchase appropriately sized molding at a hardware store and paint it whatever color suits your style.
Revamp Canvas Art
Is your old canvas art looking a little too youthful for your new place? There are several ways you can use the same canvas to create something with a little more style. Grab some small samples of fabric from the store, and glue or a stapler. Cover the old pieces of canvas with the fabric and arrange them in a unique pattern along the wall. If you want to get extra crafty, you can get some paint to make your own design, or use a photo and Mod Podge.
Do you still like the pattern of your canvas art? Add some small hooks to the bottom to hang keys or jewelry!
Transform Shelving Units and Dressers
There are so many different ways that you can revamp a shelving unit to look more chic and stylish! By adding furniture legs to the bottom of the unit and a colorful backing, your cheap bookshelf will go from college dorm appropriate to elegant and vibrant. If you’d like to get rid of some of the clutter sitting on your shelf–let’s face it, we all accumulate some over time–purchase a few nice storage bins and stow away those loose items.
Slather on a beautiful coat of paint in chic mint, aqua, yellow or a calming gray to add style to any dresser. Then, grab some nice handles or knobs from somewhere like World Market, and it will make your old unit look like an entirely different piece of furniture.
Coffee Table to Ottoman
With an appropriately sized foam, fabric and batting, you can turn an old coffee table into a beautiful and comfy ottoman that has a double function. Just purchase some trays to keep drinks and other items stable. You’ll need to be a bit crafty for this one and have access to a staple gun and drill, but the end product is worth the effort!
