Room with a View: Window Cleaning Tips

July 23, 2013 | DIY Home Improvement, Handy How-Tos

The first hint of summer sunshine after a long, drab winter can be glorious, but it also reveals the unpleasant results of going months without cleaning your windows. While no one likes streaky or dirty windows, the process of actually cleaning them can be cumbersome, to say the least. Fortunately, we have some easy window cleaning tips that will get them clean, sparkly and streak-free in no time.

The Dry Method

If you want a window cleaning tip that’s doesn’t involve any liquid, this one’s for you. When your windows aren’t particularly dirty–just dusty–use a lint-free cotton cloth to give them a quick polish. A bit of crumpled up newspaper will also do the trick.

The Vinegar Method

Popular among people who prefer natural cleaning solutions, the vinegar method of washing your windows is an easy, inexpensive way to get the job done. Combine 2 cups of water and 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle. The first time you use this DIY mixture, add 1/2 teaspoon of liquid soap or detergent to break down all the residue left over from commercial glass cleaners. After that, all you’ll need is vinegar and water! Just spray your concoction onto the window and wipe away with paper towel or crumpled up newspaper (just be wary of the undesirable combination of ink and white windowsills).

The Squeegee Method

If you really want to get serious about washing your windows, it’s time to break out the squeegee. It should be about 12 inches across with a metal frame and replaceable rubber blade–it will only cost about $20. Next, pour a few gallons of cool water into a bucket combined with a teaspoon of dishwashing soap. Grab a sponge, dip it in the water and squeeze out the excess liquid. Give the window a good scrubbing, and tip your squeegee so only the corner touches the glass. Begin at the top of the window and slowly clean a narrow strip. Next, press the entire squeegee horizontally against the glass and pull across beginning at the upper corner of the window. Be sure to wipe your squeegee clean after each swipe and you’ll have streak-free windows in no time!

A Trick of the Trade

Windows are more likely to streak if they dry quickly, so when you decide to put these window cleaning tips to use, be sure to try them out during the evening or on a cloudy day.
