Incorporated in 1898, Azusa is a historic city. The land that would eventually become Azusa was given to Luis Arenas by the Mexican government in 1841. The land eventually switched hands and became the property of Don Enrique Dalton, who built vineyards, distilleries, a smokehouse and a flour mill in the area. Dalton called his land Azusa Rancho. During California's gold rush, the area saw a dramatic population boom, and the U.S. government opened more of Azusa's land for homesteading purposes. After 24 years of litigation with the federal government, Dalton decided to sell his land to Jonathan S. Slauson, who helped the Azusa valley grow both economically and in terms of population. By 1898, Azusa's population had grown enough for it to be incorporated as a city.
