The land that would become Capitola was originally home to a vibrant village of the Soquel Native American tribe. After Mission Santa Cruz was established in 1791, Americans of European descent began to settle the area. Although the area has been home to residents for centuries, Capitola wasn't incorporated until 1949. Throughout the city's history, fishing and other water-related industries have played a large part in local growth. Capitola's history of economic prosperity continues today, as numerous employment opportunities are location within the city. According to City-Data, Capitola's population increases by about 13 percent on workdays due to commuting.
