Living in Castro Valley, CA

Castro Valley was once part of the San Jose Mission as early as 1797; however, the city didn't begin to take shape until it was founded by the city's namesake, Don Guillermo Castro. After acquiring more than 28,000 acres in a land grant, he eventually lost the city due to gambling debts and the city eventually became acquired by pioneers seeking treasures during the California Gold Rush. Today, Castro Valley has become part of the prominent and expansive Bay Area. Known for its excellent schools, beautiful scenic landscapes and high quality of life, it is no surprise that the city has seen an increase in population to more than 61,000, according to 2010 U.S. Census Bureau data. Despite being part of a fast-growing area, the city has a remarkably low cost of living compared to other residential areas in the the Bay Area, according to City-Data.
