The city is named after the Chowchilla Native American tribe who lived along the many channels of the Chowchilla River for centuries. One of the biggest attractions in the city is the Chowchilla Junior Fair, a five-day event that has been held dear in the community since 1946. The event center where the fair is held is also home to several other community events throughout the year, such as the Spring Festival, the Chowchilla Western Stampede and Armed Forces Day.
