The city of Colton spans about 16 square miles, located between San Bernardino and Riverside. The classic American city is in the heart of southern California as the crossroads of the Inland Empire. In 1840, Colton was part of two privately owned ranchos, the Jurupa and the San Bernardino Ranchos. By 1842, the area was settled by Mexican pioneers.
The Southern Pacific Railway was constructed through the valley while heading east toward Los Angeles in 1875. Throughout the next century, citrus groves in Colton were bought and sold, and the expanding railways and road systems attracted more settlers and businesses to the area. In 1875, Colton was officially founded and the city was incorporated by 1887.
