Living in Daly City, CA
Daly City occupies an area originally given as Spanish land grants that remained mostly unoccupied in the years following Gaspar de Portola’s initial sighting of San Francisco in 1769. Following the Mexican Cession of California at the end of the Mexican-American War, the U.S government claimed the land as United States property and sold stakes to private citizens. European settlers, mostly from Ireland, flocked to the area and established ranches and farms. However, years later, fog density began killing grain and potato crops, leading many families to switch to dairy and cattle farming as a source of income.
Daly City continued to grow through the 19th century with the establishment of San Mateo County and additional products and services coming from thriving San Francisco. When a major earthquake and fire destroyed most of the area in 1906, local residents bounced back and rebuilt the city’s infrastructure. Today, Daly City still attracts hard-working individuals who are passionate about their city. Increased public transportation methods throughout the San Francisco Bay Area help keep life interesting and connect local residents to the finest attractions in northern California.
