Overview of Daly City

As a coastal community just south of San Francisco, Daly City is known as the “Gateway to the Peninsula.” Scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay surround the community with the picturesque landscape that the state is famous for. As a regional hub for retail, healthcare and small business, Daly City has a young, productive workforce with innovative individuals looking to make a difference. With more than 102,000 residents, Daly City is the most populous city in San Mateo County. Look for Daly City apartments for rent, and find one of northern California’s most exciting communities.

Living in Daly City, CA

Daly City occupies an area originally given as Spanish land grants that remained mostly unoccupied in the years following Gaspar de Portola’s initial sighting of San Francisco in 1769. Following the Mexican Cession of California at the end of the Mexican-American War, the U.S government claimed the land as United States property and sold stakes to private citizens. European settlers, mostly from Ireland, flocked to the area and established ranches and farms. However, years later, fog density began killing grain and potato crops, leading many families to switch to dairy and cattle farming as a source of income.

Daly City continued to grow through the 19th century with the establishment of San Mateo County and additional products and services coming from thriving San Francisco. When a major earthquake and fire destroyed most of the area in 1906, local residents bounced back and rebuilt the city’s infrastructure. Today, Daly City still attracts hard-working individuals who are passionate about their city. Increased public transportation methods throughout the San Francisco Bay Area help keep life interesting and connect local residents to the finest attractions in northern California.

Daly City Work and Study

The Northern California Nursing Academy may be the only school in town offering a specialized education, but there are many traditional college opportunities located 8 miles away in San Francisco. San Francisco State University, the City College of San Francisco, University of California, San Francisco; Alliant International University and Heald College join the Art Institute of California, San Francisco Art Institute, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and San Francisco Conservatory of Music, among others, in offering students an exceptional, diverse education.

For those seeking work, Daly City has many business opportunities. Many residents choose to work in town and contribute to the local economy rather than commute to one of the larger cities nearby. Fifteen percent of people here work in the education, healthcare and social assistance industries, with top employers in town including Seton Medical Center, the Jefferson School District, City of Daly City offices, U.S. Postal Service and St. Francis Convalescent. Arts, entertainment, recreation and retail trade employ another 23 percent of residents in companies like Target @ Serramonte, Cow Palace, Genesys Telecommunications Lab and Macy’s.

Rentals in Daly City, CA and Cost of Living

With the high quality of life in the San Francisco Bay Area, residents in Daly City pay relatively expensive rent prices. United States Census Bureau statistics show that the standard apartment in Daly City costs $1,413 a month, which is $240 more than the California state average. Because of the city’s peninsular location, everyday living expenses are very high in Daly City. The city received a cost of living index of 148,  higher than the United States average of 100.

Daly City Attractions and Special Events

Daly City is home to the annual Filipino-American Food + Arts Festival, a cultural celebration of the Filipino-American community. The festival features outdoor vendors, live entertainment, local talent, cultural arts, food trucks, raffle prizes and more. Every year during the holiday season, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair & Victorian Holiday Party brings Christmas spirit and cheer to Daly City. The fair runs for five weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas as a holiday adventure set in Victorian London. Cow Palace is transformed, as costumed players fill music halls, pubs, dance parties and Christmas shops in the style of Charles Dickens’ story. Other local favorites include the Eat Real Festival and SuperHero Street Fair.
