Novelist Richard Henry Dana referred to a stretch of Southern California coast as "the only romantic spot in California," and Dana Point became his namesake. Dana Point was initially a refuge for pirates from Argentina after they set fire to parts of nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1818. Dana Point was incorporated in 1989 and is home to more than 35,000 residents. Dana Point Attractions and Special Events

The Dana Point Festival of Whales is the city's most famous annual event and corresponds with the migration of the California Gray Whale. The official festival takes place in March, but whale watching expeditions start at the end of December and are offered through the first of April.

Doheny State Beach in Dana Point hosts the annual Doheny Blues Festival, which is one of the biggest blues festivals in the nation. The festival features live performances on three stages, microbrew tasting and an international food court.

The Tall Ships Festival is hosted by the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor. Tall ships from up and down the West Coast gather off the shores of South Laguna and sail toward Dana Point Harbor and take spectators back in time by firing cannons along the way.
