Davis, California, is a city that has been largely shaped by University of California, Davis. Home to 65,622 residents, according to the 2010 Census, it is an educated place full of people who enjoy the outdoors and a laid-back lifestyle.

Because of this scholarly influence, the sunny metropolis has been home to a number of intelligent residents, so much so that it graced CNN's Most Educated Cities list at no. 2 in 2006. Living in Davis, CA

Now a part of Yolo County, the city had humble beginnings and grew around a railroad depot that was constructed in the late 1860s. Originally named for Jerome C. Davis, a prominent local farmer, "Davisville" grew as a farming community and eventually the city was incorporated in 1917.

The agricultural roots of the population led to the city's selection in 1905 by then Governor George Pardee as the home to the University of California's University Farm. The first students enrolled in 1908 and the school was eventually made a UC general campus. The institution and the town have not forgotten the agrarian roots of the area, and the school still trains students in a number of farm-related disciplines.

The climate of the city has been compared to that of Mediterranean cities, and this has shaped the actions of residents, especially during summer months. People can be seen walking around the campus, which is located slightly southwest of the downtown area. Finding apartments for rent in Davis is easier in areas outside of this part of town, but residents in almost all parts of the city have easy access to Interstate 80, which connects to the southern part of California.

With Sacramento and San Francisco within driving distance of the city, the former less than a 20-minute drive, jobs are available in the state capital.

With more than 30,000 students, UC Davis is an integral part of the social and cultural influence on the city.
