Soon after, pioneer families were drawn to the area for its mild climate and fertile soil. In the early 1900s two area hospitals were built, and by the mid 1950s, the city was incorporated.

The city is home to one of the top cancer hospitals in the country, The City of Hope, and is less than 10 miles from three other medical centers. Duarte residents spend a lot of time outdoors in the numerous parks and all of the services offered through the Parks and Recreation Department, such as sports leagues, excursions and cultural events.
