Imperial Beach was first founded in 1887 when developer R.R. Morrison decided to build a community on the local landscape. Originally referred to as South San Diego Beach, the area developed by Morrison included land that has since been annexed by San Diego. Other developers purchased nearby plots of land and constructed neighborhoods and subdivisions. The city's first sidewalks, general store and library were put into place during the 1900s and 1910s. Throughout the city's history, a strong military presence came into play. By 1918, North Island became a permanent air station. In present day, the city is home to the U.S. Navy's Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, also known as NOLF Imperial Beach.

Imperial Beach's oceanfront spots and numerous sandy beaches are idyllic places to jog, sunbathe, picnic or play sports. The city's 3.5 miles of white sand beaches attract visitors year after year while its pier offers views of San Diego and the Coronado Islands. For the past 30 years, locals have looked forward to Imperial Beach's annual hosting of the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. This fun and eagerly anticipated contest is a perfect match for the area's beautiful beaches and perfect weather. Additionally, the Surfboard Museum is located in Imperial Beach.
