Living in Downtown L.A.

Renting a Downtown Los Angeles apartment will put you in the heart of the city. Not only is Downtown the central business district for L.A., it’s also geographically the middle of its sprawl. Downtown LA has become a haven for artists and young professionals. Many of its vacant buildings have become luxury apartments and lofts. Downtown is being reborn. Most of the neighborhood falls in the circle made by the junctions of the 10, the 101, and the 110 freeways.

The earliest European settlement in Downtown L.A. dates back to 1781 and a Spanish missionary named Father Juan Crespí. A hundred years later, land speculation brought the area’s population up to 100,000. Then, by the early 20th century, banking, hotels, and department stores all crowded into the neighborhood. When World War II came to an end, the freeway system enticed businesses out to the suburbs. In the 21st century, developers began converting vacant office space into residential lofts and luxury apartments. Perhaps one of these rentals will be right for you.

Downtown L.A. Lifestyle and Entertainment

Downtown is home to some of Los Angeles’ premiere attractions. The Kings, the Lakers, and the Clippers all play at the Staples Center. Just next-door is L.A. Live, full of restaurants, venues, apartments, and bars. There’s also the Los Angeles Music Center, which includes the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and more.

For culinary delights, the Grand Central Market combines a fantastic produce market with a foot court. Cole’s is perhaps the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles and one of the inventors of the French dip sandwich. For a cocktail, try Villains or any of the bars over in Little Tokyo. Downtown is also spotted with small public parks and plazas. Pershing Square and Grand Hope Park are two. For a real walk in the wilderness, Elysian Park is just north of Dodger Stadium.

Downtown L.A. Info and the Rental Market

Downtown is coming up. Your rental options here most often will be lofts and luxury apartments. Expect to pay around $1,800 a month for a one-bedroom in Downtown L.A.

While many will work in the neighborhood, others will appreciate the public transit options extending from Los Angeles Union Station. This station intertwines six commuter rail lines, light rail, Amtrak service, and buses. Many of L.A.’s Metro subway lines stop Downtown as well.

Downtown Los Angeles Resources

The central branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is on 5th Street and there’s another in Little Tokyo. You can find a handful of US Post Offices Downtown. California Hospital Medical Center and the Good Samaritan Hospital are both close by. California Congressional District 34 includes Downtown L.A.

Downtown L.A. Zip Codes

Zip codes serving Downtown Los Angeles are 90012, 90013, 90014, 90015, 90017, 90021, 90026, and 90071.
