Living in East Hollywood

If you want to get a glimpse of old Hollywood, that’s easy enough to do—just rent an East Hollywood apartment. This less-travelled alternative to Hollywood proper avoids the tourist mayhem. East Hollywood instead focuses its abundant energy on locals. You’ll find tight-knit ethnic communities, hipster havens, and even some upper-class areas here. While it can lack polish in parts, that’s precisely what makes it attractive to artists, immigrants, and adventurers. East Hollywood fits roughly between Hollywood Boulevard, Western Avenue, Beverly Boulevard, and Hoover Street.

East Hollywood was annexed into Los Angeles in 1910. A decade later, immigration boomed as Armenians established an enclave here. That area is now known as Little Armenia. The L.A. riots of 1992 and the Northridge earthquake of 1994 both caused significant damage to the neighborhood. East Hollywood lost no time bouncing back, though. Now the Red Line subway runs through the area. This makes East Hollywood more accessible, but doesn’t spoil its abundant personality.

East Hollywood Lifestyle and Entertainment

There’s more than one East Hollywood. Check out the strip of restaurants and entertainment options in Thai Town. Stroll the affluent streets of Melrose Hill. Don’t forget Hel-Mel, the corner near Melrose and Heliotrope Drive. There, you can visit Scoops for a taste of chocolate wasabi ice cream. Or maybe you prefer their avocado-Pabst Blue Ribbon flavor? There are tons of places to eat and shop in East Hollywood.

Barnsdall Art Park is East Hollywood’s largest green space. This park atop Olive Hill holds the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Hollyhock House as well as an arts center.

East Hollywood Info and the Rental Market

Housing in East Hollywood is almost as varied as the people who call the neighborhood home. You’ll find apartments and homes to choose from in a range of prices. Melrose Hill, for example, is on the expensive end. Other areas remain less expensive. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the fair market rent for a one-bedroom in East Hollywood is $995.

The L.A. Metro Red Line subway stops at Vermont / Santa Monica, Vermont / Sunset, and Hollywood / Western. More than a dozen bus routes ply the major roads here. The 101 Freeway runs diagonally through East Hollywood and is the best bet for most commuters.

East Hollywood Resources

East Hollywood fits within California’s 31st and 33rd Congressional Districts. The East Hollywood Neighborhood Council represents the area in city politics. The Cahuenga Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is on Santa Monica Boulevard.
