Living in Echo Park

Echo Park apartments and those who rent them share a reputation for being Bohemian. This attracts hyper-cool hipsters, aging radicals, working-class families, and artists. It’s a delectable mix of people here and locals take pride in the neighborhood. Echo Park homes surround the park of the same name, spreading up into the leafy surrounding streets. Echo Park has no official boundaries. It’s located north of Downtown, east of Silver Lake, west of Elysian Park, and south of the Los Angeles River.

Developer Thomas Kelly founded Echo Park in the late 19th century. It’s said workers heard their voices rebound off canyon walls and that’s where the name came from. Before then, the area was known as Edendale. Echo Park played host to the film industry in the silent era. Until World War II, the neighborhood was middle-class and known for its community of radicals. Echo Park is popular with creative artists for its relatively cheap rents and alternative aesthetic.

Echo Park Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sunset Boulevard is the main drag of Echo Park. Along here you can find hipster clubs, dive bars, odd shops, great food, and groceries. People speak highly of Two Boots pizzeria and Barragan’s Mexican Restaurant. Music venues like El Prado and Echoplex neighbor boutiques and coffee shops. You can even learn something at the time traveler’s mart at 826LA or at the Echo Park Film Center.

The view of L.A.’s Downtown skyline from Echo Park is a neighborhood highlight. Watch fountains in the lake shoot water in the air and relax by the palms. There’s a kid’s play area here as well. For more outdoor opportunity, try exploring the trails in nearby Elysian Park.

Echo Park Info and the Rental Market

You can rent ranch and mission bungalow homes here, as well as apartments. Houses and lots tend to be on the smaller side. A one-bedroom averages around $1,200 a month.

For commuters, Downtown is quite close. So is Union Station, where you can catch all sorts of buses, subways, and light rail trains. Convenient freeways include the 101, the 5, and the 2.

Echo Park Resources

Echo Park and Edendale Branch Libraries both serve the neighborhood. There’s a United States Post Office on North Alvarado. California’s 31st Congressional District includes Echo Park. The Silver Lake Medical Center is just on the south side of the 101 freeway.

Echo Park Zip Codes

Zip codes serving Echo Park are 90026, 90031, and 90039.
