Overview of Hancock Park

Hancock Park rentals are some of the most sedate and safe in Los Angeles. This historic neighborhood is practically synonymous with old L.A. class. Drive through and you’ll see period California-style homes with carefully tended grounds—no modern monstrosities. That’s because it’s not glitzy in Hancock Park, just upper crust. Those lucky enough to live in the neighborhood strive to maintain the community’s peaceful vibe. It’s an ambiance worth protecting. Wilshire Boulevard and Arden, Melrose, and La Brea avenues border Hancock Park.

Since it was first developed, Hancock Park has remained an affluent area. George Hancock inherited 4,400 acres of land here from his father in the 1920s. He subdivided the property and the first of these elegant homes went up. As the community grew, so did a commitment to preserving the neighborhood’s better qualities. For example, community activists here stopped the Red Line subway from tunneling under Wilshire Boulevard back in the 1980s. Now, however, that route extension is back on the books.

Hancock Park Lifestyle and Entertainment

Hancock Park restaurants and stores are mostly found around the edges of the neighborhood. Visit Melrose, Highland, and Wilshire for a variety of eating and shopping options. The close by Larchmont Village area also has banks, restaurants, and cafés. Within Hancock Park itself, you’re more likely to find a school than a bar.

The Wilshire Country Club is located in Hancock Park, but it’s private. No cell phones or short pants allowed. The streets in Hancock Park are lined with palm trees, but there aren’t any sizable parks here.

Hancock Park Info and the Rental Market

Most people in Hancock Park live in single-family homes featuring beautiful architecture and well considered landscaping. You’ll also find some charming older apartment buildings in the neighborhood. While the houses tend to be expensive and occupied by empty nesters, a younger crowd inhabits the apartments. The average Hancock Park house rents for $4,230 but you can find a one-bedroom apartment for more like $1,800 a month.

Hancock commuters generally drive their own cars. The 101 Freeway has on-ramps off Melrose, not too far away. The 10 Freeway, the next closest, requires more driving on busy surface streets. There are also MTA buses that run down major streets in Hancock Park.

California’s 33rd Congressional District covers Hancock Park. The John C. Freemont Branch Library is on Melrose Avenue. You’ll have to leave the neighborhood to find a US Post Office. The Wilshire Country Club is open to members and their guests only.
