Overview of Jewelry District

Jewelry District apartments can be found along six blocks of Los Angeles’ Downtown. This is the second largest jewelry district in world, with over 5,000 wholesale and retail jewelry shops—and some residential rentals, too. The Jewelry District is between the Financial District and the Historic Core of Downtown. It’s limited to the strips of Broadway, Hill, and Olive streets between 5th and 8th streets.

Most of the buildings in this neighborhood were built in the 1920s. Like the rest of Downtown, many businesses and residents moved away after the freeway system took off. In the late 1960s, jewelry stores started to fill the neighborhood. Now, these architecturally interesting buildings are filled with rings, bangles, bracelets, and gold. It’s a small neighborhood, but an interesting one. From here, you’re close to all Downtown has to offer.

Jewelry District Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Jewelry District is mostly precious metals and gems. That said, you can find restaurants here and some everyday shopping, too. St. Vincent’s Court is a cute alley that’s good for restaurants and delis. Many of these places do a lot of business lunches, so check before you head out for dinner. Clifton’s Cafeteria dates back to the depression-era. While the dining here isn’t outstanding, the décor is worth a look. It’s an L.A. institution. For a fancier meal, try Cicada. They operate a vintage-style nightclub with fancy cocktails and 1920’s music on Sunday nights.

Pershing Square is the only park in the Jewelry District. It’s not massive, but it’s got trees, art, and free concerts. It was redone in 1994 and looks pretty snazzy.

Jewelry District Info and the Rental Market

Jewelry District rentals will be lofts and apartments. There are some new luxury units, but most of the buildings date to the early 20th century. Residents tend to be young and professional, taking advantage of the proximity to Downtown jobs. Expect to pay around $1,850 for a one-bedroom in the Jewelry District.

Commuting from the neighborhood isn’t difficult. The Metro Red and Purple Lines stop at Pershing Square Station. DASH buses and others serve the area well. If you’re driving, you’ll most likely jump on the Harbor Freeway and make your way from there.

Jewelry District Resources

The Jewelry District isn’t far from the Central Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library on Grand Avenue and 5th Street. There are a few US Post Offices within a block or two of the neighborhood as well. These blocks are within California’s 34th Congressional District.
