Living in Lafayette Park

Lafayette Park apartments and rentals carve out a pocket between the Wilshire Center, Koreatown, and Westlake neighborhoods. This community surrounds the square referred to as either Lafayette Park or, more recently, Lafayette Recreation Center. Because of its location, these blocks split the characteristics of the communities that surround them. Lafayette Park, the center of the neighborhood, is located between Wilshire Boulevard and 6th Street. It divides Hoover Street from North Hoover Street.

Lafayette Park was donated to the City of Los Angeles in 1899. At first, the land was just oil wells and tar seeps. Planted palm trees and jacaranda made it more welcoming. The city called it Sunset Park until local residents requested they change the name to honor Marquis de Lafayette. There’s a statue of Lafayette in the park now, installed in 1937. In the ‘60s, a senior center was built here. It was expanded and improved until, in 2011, it became part of the Lafayette Park Recreation Center.

Lafayette Park Lifestyle and Entertainment

Because it’s a fairly compact neighborhood, Lafayette Park residents will need to wander afield to find more than their basic services. There are groceries and pharmacies and salons in these blocks, but options are limited. You can also find local restaurants, such as pizza places and taquerias. For entertainment, your best bet is to head into Koreatown to the west. Lafayette Park features ball courts, a skate park, and picnic areas.

Lafayette Park Info and the Rental Market

Some condos and apartments near Lafayette Park have benefitted from the gentrification seeping in from Koreatown. Others remain in need of improvement. The average one-bedroom goes for $1,300 a month here.

Lafayette Park is fairly easy for commuters, with Metro Purple Line and Red Line trains both stopping at the nearby Westlake / MacArthur Park Station. It’s not too far to the Hollywood or Harbor freeway from here. MTA buses run down many of the streets around Lafayette Park.

Lafayette Park Resources

The Felipe De Neve Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is in Lafayette Park. There’s a US Post Office just west of the park, on Wilshire Boulevard. The Shriners Hospital for Children is to the northwest. Lafayette Park is in California’s 31st and 33rd Congressional Districts.

Lafayette Park Zip Codes

Lafayette Park is split between the 90005, 90020, and 90057 zip codes.
