Living in Mid-Wilshire
Mid-Wilshire centers on the stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between La Cienega Boulevard and Western Avenue. The encompassed area includes sub-neighborhoods as different as the Miracle Mile, Larchmont Village, and Koreatown. The Mid-Wilshire section of Los Angeles was developed after the Los Angeles Aqueduct opened in 1913. It filled with palm-lined streets, apartments and rentals, houses, and commercial enterprises.
Mid-Wilshire Lifestyle and Entertainment
The Mid-Wilshire area includes all the museums of the Miracle Mile, such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Peterson Automotive Museum. You’ve also got the La Brea Tar Pits here. CBS Television City and the area around 3rd Street are great for shopping and eating. For other food and drink options, try Beverly Boulevard and La Brea Avenue.
A few parks dot the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood. There are the lawns around the La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park. The Wilshire Country Club is members only.
Mid-Wilshire Info and the Rental Market
You’ll find pockets of stately single-family homes, duplexes, and apartment buildings in Mid-Wilshire. There are new apartment towers going up, too, but on the whole it’s a low-density, low-rise neighborhood. One-bedroom apartments here rent for around $1,205 and houses average $1,650.
Mid-Wilshire commuters will likely take surface streets if they’re heading to Century City or other west side neighborhoods. Los Angeles MTA buses run along Wilshire, Fairfax, La Cienega, and others. You can also catch the Big Blue Bus out to Santa Monica. By current predictions, the Purple Line of the Metro subway will extend to Mid-Wilshire by 2020.
There are few branches of the Los Angeles Public Library in the Mid-Wilshire area and a handful of US Post Offices. The Olympia Medical Center is on Olympic near where it crosses San Vicente. Mid-Wilshire is split between California Congressional Districts 30 and 33.
