Living in the Miracle Mile
It may surprise you to know that Miracle Mile apartments exist. Many consider this section of Mid-Wilshire to be all business, but that’s not the case. Those who live here smirk about their secret neighborhood. Their apartments are close to the excitement of the Miracle Mile, plus they’re safe. The Miracle Mile is found on Wilshire Boulevard between Fairfax and Highland avenues. The neighborhood extends up to 3rd Street and down to San Vicente Boulevard. The blocks further north, between 3rd and Beverly, La Brea and Pan Pacific Park, are known as Miracle Mile North.
In the 1920s, this western stretch of Wilshire Boulevard was unpaved. If you looked alongside it, all you’d find would be bean fields and cows. Then the Red Car trolley system came and so did development. Wilshire was built to serve drivers. It featured innovations like left-turn lanes and timed lights—brand new ideas. Businesses here were required to build parking lots and post signs readable from moving vehicles. These guidelines proved so successful the name “Miracle Mile” was bestowed. The rise of mall culture has lessened the impact of this strip of Wilshire, but it remains an important center of the city.
Miracle Mile Lifestyle and Entertainment
Most people think of museums when they think of the Miracle Mile. The Peterson Automotive Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the La Brea Tar Pits, and others crowd these blocks of Wilshire Boulevard. In between all this culture, you’ll also find restaurants like Starfish Sushi and Umami Burger. Shopping is plentiful, too, with stores such as Office Depot and Trader Joe’s here. The El Rey Theater, a concert venue, is also in this neighborhood.
Parks serving Miracle Mile residents include Hancock Park, which is around the La Brea Tar Pits, and Pan Pacific Park to the northwest.
Miracle Mile Info and the Rental Market
The Miracle Mile is a densely populated L.A. neighborhood. Mid-century architecture makes apartment buildings here a bit classier and roomier than developments from the 1960s and ‘70s. In Miracle Mile North, a designated historic preservation overlay zone, you’ll find single-family homes in Period Revival and other styles. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment here is around $2,800 a month.
Buses run down the major streets in this part of town. There is an extension of the Metro Purple Line subway proposed to serve the Miracle Mile, but it isn’t built yet. The closest freeway is the Santa Monica.

There are a couple of US Post Offices on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile. The Fairfax Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library system is north of 3rd Street on South Gardener. This neighborhood is within California’s 30th and 33rd Congressional Districts.
