Living in Palms

Palms apartments are popular. Lucky for you, this neighborhood is rich with apartments. That means Palms rentals can be popular and reasonably priced at the same time. You’ll find some commercial strips along major streets here, but primarily this is a neighborhood where people live. Residents choose Palms for its West Side sea breezes, for its convenient freeway access, and because it’s not as pricey as Westwood. There are no official boundaries to the neighborhood, but you’ll find Palms in the triangle formed by the Santa Monica Freeway, the San Diego Freeway, and the border of Culver City.

The first real town here was founded in 1886. The land had previously been part of Rancho La Ballona and used for cattle grazing. When the railroads reached the coast, the area began to shift to residential use. Speculators divided the land into parcels and named the development “The Palms.” There weren’t any palm trees, though, so some had to be planted. Up until the 1960s, there were mostly Craftsman and Spanish Colonial homes here. Rezoning encouraged Palms’ wholesale transformation into a place for apartments. As Culver City’s revival energized the area in the mid-1990s, Palms also saw a boost. Today, many choose this neighborhood as an affordable and less traffic-choked alternative to other West Side locations.

Palms Lifestyle and Entertainment

Because Palms is primarily residential, most renters head down to Culver City or to other areas to eat and shop. For entertainment, take a peek at the Museum of Jurassic Technology. This is an educational institution that defies easy explanation. You can also find the Ivy Substation theater in Palms. This venue serves as home to the Actors Gang, headed by well-known actor Tim Robbins. Palms Recreation Center has lawns, basketball courts, and other facilities.

Palms Info and the Rental Market

Almost all of the real estate in Palms is apartment buildings. The people here are mostly renters, too. In the northwest, you can find some single-family homes. The average rent for a one-bedroom is $1,485.

Transportation in Palms is good and it’s going to get better. The neighborhood lies alongside the 405 and 10 freeways. You can catch various routes of the Big Blue Bus, MTA, and Culver City Bus service in Palms. Sometime in the near future, the Expo Line of the Los Angeles Metro will bring light rail to Culver City.

Palms Resources

Palms falls in California’s 33rd and 36th Congressional District. There’s a US Post Office on Motor Avenue. You can find the Palms-Rancho Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library next to the Palms Recreation Center. The Brotman Medical Center is just across Venice Boulevard in Culver City.
