Living in Runyon Canyon

Runyon Canyon apartments flank the park that gives the neighborhood its name. On three sides of this quiet canyon, the streets are narrow and winding. Homes up this way feel secluded, but they aren’t far from civilization. That’s because on the south side of the park you’ll find Hollywood Boulevard. Down there, things are a bit busier. Apartment buildings at the base of the canyon back up against the Hollywood Hills. These rentals situate people closer to shops and services, putting them right on the edge of Hollywood proper.

Runyon Canyon is a 160-acre park that was privately owned up until 1984. Back in the day, the gorge here was known as “No Man’s Canyon.” Then Carman Runyon bought the land in 1919. He used it for riding and hunting. Later, a mansion was built on the land the by famous tenor, John McCormack. When he travelled, early Hollywood luminaries used his estate. Now that the land is public, people come to Runyon Canyon to hike, with or without their dogs.

Runyon Canyon Lifestyle and Entertainment

Runyon Canyon Park and the connected Wattles Garden Park are the main features of this neighborhood. The southern entrance to Runyon Canyon is off Fuller Avenue and the northern is off Mulholland Drive. It’s crossed with hiking trails, including one up to Indian Rock at 1,320 feet.

There aren’t many shops or stores in the Runyon Canyon area. The closest services are found in Hollywood. Close by you’ll find the Magic Castle—a magician’s paradise—and Yamashiro Restaurant, serving Asian-influenced meals.

Runyon Canyon Info and the Rental Market

Most single-family home rentals in Runyon Canyon are expensive. On the southern side of the neighborhood, there are apartment buildings. As you move up the canyon, things get pricier and residents get wealthier. The average two-bedroom apartment here rents for $2,700 a month.

This neighborhood isn’t great for commuting. Hollywood and the Hollywood Freeway can both be extremely slow in traffic. There are buses that run down Hollywood Boulevard, but you really need a car to get around.

Runyon Canyon Resources

Runyon Canyon isn’t big on resources. You’ll have to drive into Hollywood or West Hollywood to find a public library or a post office. The neighborhood is in California’s 28th Congressional District.
