Living in South Park
South Park apartments and lofts have really only been available for the past decade or so. Up until recently, this southwest corner of Downtown Los Angeles felt industrial. Then the Los Angeles Convention Center expanded. The Stapes Center and the L.A. Live entertainment complex were built shortly thereafter. It didn’t take long for luxury apartments and lofts to follow. These rentals are filling fast with young professionals who want the big city right outside their floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s chic urban living, but crime remains an issue here. The Harbor Freeway, the Santa Monica Freeway, Main Street, and Eighth Street define the edges South Park.
South Park Lifestyle and Entertainment
South Park is the entertainment hub of Downtown and a major destination for Angelenos. Concerts, professional sports, and giant conventions all kick off here. It’s also busy with lounges and other nightlife. J. Restaurant and Lounge is a good place for a quaff, as is Corkbar if you prefer wine. There are restaurants in South Park, too, such as Palm steakhouse and Trader Vic’s. The Original Pantry Café is a 50s style joint that’s great for big breakfasts.
You’ll find plenty of retail to keep you busy in South Park. The grocery giant Ralph’s has returned to the neighborhood after a long absence. Grand Hope Park is the local green space.
South Park Info and the Rental Market
Living in South Park means luxury apartments, condos, and lofts. Residences at Eleven and Luma received LEED Gold designation for their eco-conscious design—a first for California. Many who live in South Park are young professionals or students studying at the University of Southern California. You won’t see a lot of families around. For rent, expect to pay in the vicinity of $1,850 for a one-bedroom apartment.
If you don’t work Downtown, the Blue Line light rail stops at Pico / Chick Hearn station. The area is well served by buses and the subway isn’t too long a walk away, either. From South Park, both the 110 and 10 freeways are easy to access.
