Living in West L.A.

Score a West L.A. apartment and you could be living the sweet life. This in-between neighborhood puts you near some the best Los Angeles has to offer. It won’t feel like you’re in the thick of things, though. West L.A. is a breezy area where comfort comes easy. Finding the neighborhood, on the other hand, can be tricky. Where it stops or starts depends on whom you ask. West L.A. is definitely found beside the San Diego Freeway between Santa Monica and Pico boulevards—give or take. Most say it’s on the west side of the 405, out to Centinela Avenue. Others say it’s on the east side, to Beverly Glen Boulevard. Let’s not argue about it. We like West L.A. wherever you draw the line.

This part of California was farmland up until the 20th century. Many Japanese immigrants chose to settle here then, and some started orchards. The section of West L.A. that’s still home to many Japanese Americans is known as Sawtelle, or Little Osaka. Los Angeles annexed West L.A. in the 1920s. Today, this part of town is known to be quiet and safe. It may be hard to pin down, but that doesn’t make it difficult to like.

West L.A. Lifestyle and Entertainment

West Los Angeles has a wealth of different commercial areas. Between them, you’ll find a wide range of high-quality eating and shopping options. Both the Japanese and Mexican communities in West L.A. support ethnic restaurants and stores. Nijiya Market, for example, is considered by some to be the best Japanese market in town. For less exotic delights, Cacao café stays open until 3 a.m.

Stoner Recreation Center in West L.A. includes ball fields, a playground, picnic areas, and an indoor gymnasium. There’s also a skate park there.

West L.A. Info and the Rental Market

This part of Los Angeles, like others on the Westside, is fairly affluent. Here, you’ll find high-rise apartment buildings plus upscale low-rise apartments and high-quality, single-story tract housing. Many residents are young professionals or raising families. Rent for a one-bedroom in West L.A. averages $1,772 a month.

Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus service and MTA buses both operate in West L.A. The neighborhood is convenient to both the 405 and the 10 freeways, but driving towards Downtown in morning rush hour can be extra-slow.
