Overview of Wilshire
Everything north of the 10 freeway, east of Beverly Hills, west of Downtown, and south of Hollywood is considered part of the Wilshire neighborhood. Rentals here—including Wilshire apartments, houses, duplexes, and more—are hard to describe with generalizations. That’s because so many smaller neighborhoods join together to make up Wilshire, including Hancock Park and Carthay.
Wilshire Lifestyle and Entertainment
There isn’t much you can’t find to eat or buy within the confines of Wilshire. For dining, Carthay and Koreatown neighborhoods serve up some of the best meals in Los Angeles. Bars abound, and it’s hard to choose even a single stretch of street toward which to point revelers. To get started, try along Melrose Avenue.
Entertainment options line Wilshire Boulevard, mostly in the form of museums. The Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, or LACMA as locals call it, is one of the top picks. In terms of parks, the biggest in the neighborhood is Pan Pacific Park, unless you have access to the members only Wilshire Country Club in Hancock Park.
Wilshire Info and the Rental Market
From the new high-rises in Koreatown to the stately estates of Larchmont, Wilshire rental options run the gamut. Who you live next to, and what you’ll have to spend, depends greatly on which part of this large area you settle in. To put a number on it, rent for a two-bedroom here will cost around $1,800 a month.
Getting to and from Wilshire also depends on which end of central Los Angeles we’re talking about. The Metro Purple Line subway reaches out as far as Wilshire and Western, with extensions planned. A whole host of buses crisscross the area as well. For drivers, many will head down to the 10 to get Downtown or out to the coast.
You can find a few branches of the Los Angeles Public Library in Wilshire and you won’t have to look hard to find a post office, either. L.A. isn’t lacking in hospitals, but the Olympia Medical Center might be the closest if you’re living in Wilshire. Parts of this neighborhood are represented by California Congressional Districts 30, 31, and 33.
