Living in Martinez, CA

Once a lively ferry landing and gold rush staging point, Martinez is one of the oldest cities in

California. For generations, the area’s good farmland and convenient waterfront access have made it a destination for historic residents like John Muir, the noted naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club, and businesses like Shell, whose Martinez refinery helped fuel local growth in the early 20th century. This long history has helped Martinez develop a distinctive downtown, where visitors can browse through antique stores, dine at restaurants or walk along beautiful Alhambra Creek.

With less than 37,000 residents, Martinez maintains a small town charm. Residents of Martinez apartments can enjoy an extensive waterfront, scenic trails and excellent recreation facilities. They also can check out the local nightlife, made famous by the fact that Martinez claims to be the birthplace of the martini.

Martinez Work and Study

Although Martinez has no colleges of its own, it serves as the district office for the Contra Costa Community College District, which contains several campuses within close driving distance. Martinez students are also close to many renowned Bay Area colleges and universities.

As the county seat, Martinez’s principal employer is Contra Costa County, which provides jobs for nearly half the city. Other major employers include the Shell Oil Refinery, Kaiser Permanente and a VA Medical Center. With access of all the major East Bay cities, Martinez is also home to a number of commuters.

Rentals in Martinez, CA, and Cost of Living

Compared to the expensive living of the San Francisco area, Martinez is a reasonably affordable Northern California community. Around one third of residents rent, and, while finding a rental can be competitive, there are many great options.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed the median gross rent from 2008 to 2010 was $1,259, while additional research found one bedroom apartments renting for $850-$1,350 per month.

Martinez Attractions and Special Events

In addition to communing with the early gold prospectors by swigging martinis, history buffs can check out a number of local landmarks, most notably the John Muir National Historic Site. John Muir, whose interest in the preservation of nature helped prompt the founding of the National Parks system, lived in Martinez, and his home is now a popular museum.

Residents can also enjoy the city’s classic Victorian and early 20th century architecture during a stroll around the downtown area, where they can browse Martinez’s many shops, restaurants and cultural offerings. An outdoor amphitheater as well as a wide range of local festivals and events keeps the area buzzing with activity.

Martinez is home to the country’s largest bocce ball league, and the city’s active residents can take advantage of world class bocce facilities in addition to great recreation options and athletic fields at the many local parks. The waterfront and marina areas provide great destinations for outdoor fun, with hiking trails, fishing and boating. Martinez residents can also head to the nearby Bay Area cities for more fun, a trip made easy by the city’s great Amtrak station.
