Moorpark, located within scenic Ventura County, Calif., lies within a valley created by the Arroyo Simi River. The community has a large number of Moorpark apricot trees growing throughout the valley, which is how Poindexter came up with the name. The city was active in nuclear power and was the first town in the United States to utilize power generated by the Sodium Reactor Experiment. The reactor operated from 1957 to 1965 and produced 7.5 megawatts of electrical power from one of the local generating systems. Since then, Moorpark has continued to be one of the largest communities within the city.

Moorpark is home to a number of parks, museums and spaces perfect for large or small groups or individuals to gather. One of the most well-known spots within the community is Old Town Moorpark, which contains some of the community's most unique eateries and shops. The streets in the historical section are lined with pepper trees planted by Poindexter while he was plotting and mapping the town. There is a large art facility, the High Street Arts Center, which was established and operated by the city of Moorpark.

Each year, the city is the host of its annual Apricot Festival to celebrate the fact that the city has a bounty of the fruit trees. Nature enthusiasts will find comfort knowing they will be close to some of the region's best hiking and nature areas, such as the Angeles National Forest, Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Channel Islands National Park and the Los Padres National Forest. For families looking to take a trip to Disneyland, the world-famous park is only a 75-mile drive away.
