The Northridge economy was initially based on local agriculture, but orange groves started making way for housing developments in the 1950s. California State University, Northridge is now the largest employer in the city, but in an effort to preserve the history of the city, has preserved one of the last remaining orange groves on the campus. More than 80 percent of CSUN graduates stay in California after graduation, contributing to the diverse Los Angeles economy in industries such as entertainment, banking, finance, manufacturing and high-tech research.

Northridge residents are served by the community colleges of Los Angeles Valley College, Pierce College and Los Angeles Mission College; they are all part of the Los Angeles Community College District, which is the largest in the nation. California State University, Northridge is the most popular Northridge location for higher learning with almost 36,000 students in the university community. Notable CSUN alumni include Grammy Award winners, public officials and a space shuttle astronaut.
