Overview of Palmdale

The city of Palmdale has good reason to celebrate. In addition to celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, the relatively young city was also recently hailed as one of the fastest-growing cities in California and America by the U.S. Census Bureau. In accordance with the city's slogan, "A place to call home," Palmdale is home to many families and Californians who prefer the feel of a tight-knit community just 60 miles from buzzing downtown Los Angeles.

Families looking for apartments for rent in Palmdale will join a community of more than 152,000 residents - 37 percent of which are under the age of 20. The DryTown Water Park, family-friendly outdoor activities and plenty of after-school entertainment make Palmdale the place to be for Californian parents and children alike.

Living in Palmdale, CA

Palmdale - part of the greater Antelope Valley and located within Los Angeles County - is close to plenty of natural wonders: the Mojave Desert, San Joaquin Valley, the Tehachapi Mountains and San Gabriel Mountains. Although Native American tribes still occupy areas within the nearby desert, Palmdale was first inhibited by the Kitanemuk tribe and frequented by the Yokuts, Chumash and Shoshone tribes.

Palmdale got its earliest start in 1886, thanks to it being the crossroads of the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks and Fort Tejon Road, no called Barrel Springs Road. As families moved west to find fortune and new lives, the first settlers came to the area. However, the settlers mistook native Joshua trees for palm trees, having never seen either in the Midwest, and named the city Palmenthal, meaning "Palms Valley" in German. Years later in 1962, the now-renamed Palmdale township became an official city.

Palmdale Work and Study

The city of Palmdale has a rich stake in America's aerospace industry as the home to Air Force Plant 42, Lockheed martin Aeronautics, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, BAE Systems and AERO Institute. Other top employers include Los Angeles County, Lockheed Martin, Palmdale School District, Antelope Valley Hospital and Northrop Grumman.

Although there are plenty of collegiate options close to Palmdale, the area is also home to Westside School District and Palmdale Elementary School District, the latter being the fourth-largest elementary school district in the state and the largest in Los Angeles County.

People looking for apartments in Palmdale and hoping to continue their education in local aeronautical programs may also take courses at the nearby AERO Institute and Palmdale Aerospace Academy.
