Pittsburg, CA
Overview of Pittsburg
Located in eastern Contra Costa County, Pittsburg was initially named New York of the Pacific. After coal was discovered in the hills three miles south of town, it was renamed Black Diamond, but that soon changed after Columbia Geneva Steel opened for business in 1906. In honor of the eastern birthplace of the steel industry, the name was changed to Pittsburg in 1911, without the "h" for simplified spelling. Today, Pittsburg is home to 64,294 residents, and Pittsburg apartments for rent are in one of the most vibrant communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Living in Pittsburg, CA
Residents in Pittsburg enjoy the small town feel of the city without feeling isolated from the rest of the Bay Area, thanks to the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) that connects Pittsburg with downtown San Francisco. The city also boasts numerous parks and outdoor recreation opportunities, the most notable of which is the Pittsburg Marina. Because Pittsburg has a Mediterranean climate, it's the perfect location for golf enthusiasts to head over to the Delta View Golf Club; the championship course spans over 6,317 yards with eucalyptus trees lining the fairways and Mt. Diablo towering in the background.
Pittsburg Work and Study
The Pittsburg Unified School District is made up of eight elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools, and maintains cooperative student teaching agreements with notable Bay Area colleges such as San Francisco State, UC Berkeley and St. Mary's College.
Pittsburg also is home to a community college, Los Medanos Community College, which has an average enrollment of 10,000 students. Since 2006, Los Medanos College has increased its classroom space by 50 percent, and offers small classes across a wide range of degree and certificate programs.
Pittsburg has a history of coal mining and industrial development, and has expanded its local economy to include a diverse mix of industries. The City of Pittsburg Comprehensive Annual Financial Report listed Pittsburg Unified School District, USS-POSCO Industries, Los Medanos College, Dow Chemical Company and the City of Pittsburg as the top employers in 2009.
Rentals in Pittsburg, CA and Cost of Living
Pittsburg offers numerous real estate options thanks to its diverse community. Residents can choose to live on the water at the marina, in the hills surrounding Mt. Diablo, or in the Old Town District known for its historic buildings and community events.
