Located in eastern Contra Costa County, Pittsburg was initially named New York of the Pacific. After coal was discovered in the hills three miles south of town, it was renamed Black Diamond, but that soon changed after Columbia Geneva Steel opened for business in 1906. In honor of the eastern birthplace of the steel industry, the name was changed to Pittsburg in 1911, without the "h" for simplified spelling. Pittsburg has a history of coal mining and industrial development, and has expanded its local economy to include a diverse mix of industries. The City of Pittsburg Comprehensive Annual Financial Report listed Pittsburg Unified School District, USS-POSCO Industries, Los Medanos College, Dow Chemical Company and the City of Pittsburg as the top employers in 2009.

Pittsburg offers numerous real estate options thanks to its diverse community. Residents can choose to live on the water at the marina, in the hills surrounding Mt.
