Overview of Poway

Poway is a rural community in northeast San Diego County, Calif. The environmentally-focused town is also known as "The City in the Country," which offers residents numerous square miles of preserved and open land. Although the community is located within a country setting, individuals searching for Poway apartments for rent who want to live close to a city are in luck. Poway offers residents the opportunity to live a rustic lifestyle while only being about 25 miles from downtown San Diego.

Living in Poway, CA

The origin of Poway's name is derived from the Kumeyaay First Nation, a native group who lived on the land for hundreds of years prior to the Spaniards' conquest of California. The name, which has been given a number of translations, including "the meeting of little valleys" or "end of the valley," was rooted in a number of disagreements between experts and historians. The first white settler believed to establish himself in Poway is Philip Crosthwaite, who put down roots there in 1859. The town quickly turned into a booming agricultural community with a bounty of crops including peaches, Muscat grapes, apricots, pears, hay and alfalfa. However, expansion of the community failed to turn the farming town into a great success until the turn of the century. Though the farmers' success benefited the town's economy, the growth of the community wasn't recognized until the 1950s, when Poway's first subdivision was established. The town is now home to seven elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools, which makes it an excellent choice for families.

Residents also can enjoy 82 miles of trails within the town's many community parks.
